For decades, Black Hawk College has been woven into the fabric of this region. Generations of students – many the first in their families to attend college – have studied here, building lives, careers and communities. With the renovation of Building 2 at our Quad-Cities Campus, we continue that story by preparing today’s students for the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow.
Expansion meets the community’s needs
This $29 million renovation and expansion represents more than bricks and mortar. It is the result of listening to our students, faculty and community partners. We asked what they needed to succeed. We asked local employers what skills they expect from the workforce of the future. The design of Building 2 reflects those answers. At 66,000 square feet, it now houses some of our most in-demand career and technical programs, including welding, cybersecurity, engineering technology, computer information systems and mechatronics. The building features classrooms, labs, study rooms, an Innovation Hub, an esports facility and expanded lounge areas that encourage creativity and collaboration.

What makes this project meaningful is not only the modern spaces but the opportunities they create. Recently, while walking through Building 2, I spoke with a student who was particularly thrilled about the new computer lab and how it will give him the tools and confidence to push his skills further. His genuine excitement is what this work is all about. Each classroom and lab represent a chance for a student to discover new confidence and for our region to gain a new leader, entrepreneur or skilled professional.
At Black Hawk College, we believe students come first. Building 2 reflects that philosophy. Its flexible, multi-use spaces ensure we can adapt as industries evolve. It is designed to give students hands-on experiences that prepare them for lifelong success.
This renovation also reflects the priorities outlined in our Strategic Plan. Guided by our mission to inspire students, develop talent and strengthen communities, we are focused on expanding workforce development opportunities, elevating student success and investing in our employees. These goals are not abstract. They are lived out daily across our district – in classrooms, on athletic fields, at outreach centers and through partnerships with local schools and employers.

For 79 years, Black Hawk College has been shaping futures. The renovation of Building 2 is a milestone that reflects the same values that have guided us since the beginning: community, opportunity and student success. Together, we are ensuring Black Hawk remains built for the future – because our students are the future.
