Black Hawk College kicked off its 80th anniversary with an ‘80s-themed celebration and introduction of the college’s new mascot.
More than 150 people – students, employees, alumni, college retirees and community members – gathered Sept. 10 in the Quad-Cities Campus gym for free food, a live band, a candy bar and a photo booth/selfie station.
BHC president Dr. Jeremy Thomas welcomed guests to begin the celebration.
“For 80 years, generations of students have walked through our doors, built careers and strengthened the communities we call home,” he said.
“A lot has changed since 1946, but what has not changed is our commitment to our students and our region,” he said.
“We are here to create opportunities, develop talent and help our students build a future for themselves and their families.”
Dr. Thomas also officially introduced the newest member of the Black Hawk College family, Blaze the Brave.
The campus community was asked to vote for one of three names for the mascot and with 46% of the votes from students and employees, Blaze the Brave took flight.
“Blaze represents something we see in our students every day – determination, hard work and a drive to keep moving forward,” Dr. Thomas said.
“From the sidelines to the hallways,” he said. “Blaze will be here to bring Braves together, build Black Hawk pride and cheer on our students.”
