IAI Participant

This college or university participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative.

The Illinois Articulation Initiative General Education Core Curriculum (IAI GECC) is a collection of general education courses that, when completed, an IAI participating institution agrees to accept in place of its own comparable lower-division general education requirements. Completing the IAI GECC works best for students who plan to transfer to an IAI participating school but who have not decided which one.

When the IAI GECC is not completed before transfer, the IAI-participating school will evaluate general education courses on a course-by-course basis and how they fulfill the transfer school’s requirement.

Course Recommendations & Resources

The GECC consists of a complete set of a minimum of twelve IAI courses (minimum 37 credit hours), and are part of the Associate in Arts degree at Black Hawk College. See the list of courses eligible for the IAI GECC in the Associate of Arts degree. These GECC courses are considered a ‘package’ to satisfy lower division General Education requirements, and course-to-course transfer is not guaranteed.

General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) completion post-matriculation

Under the following circumstances, institutions will offer transfer students the option of satisfying lower-division general education requirements by completing a GECC curriculum while enrolled in the receiving institution.

  • When the transfer student has completed a statewide articulated associate degree such as the AFA, AES, AAT; or
  • When the transfer student has been granted 30 semester hours of transfer credit by the receiving institution without having completed the GECC. (Although not specified, the nature of lower-division curricula indicates that 30 semester hours of transfer credits from an IAI institution will likely incorporate GECC credits.)
