The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) lets students earn Black Hawk College credit by demonstrating college-level knowledge gained outside the classroom. Credit is awarded per college policy to enrolled or former students; no grades are given, and transferability depends on the receiving institution.

Black Hawk College collaborates with Midwest Technical Institute (MTI) to facilitate the transfer of select MTI certificates toward Associate in Applied Science degrees in Health Information Management or General Occupational and Technical Studies. Graduates from MTI since October 2018 with certificates in Dental Assisting, Journeyman Welder, Journeyman Welder II, Medical Assisting, Medical Coding, Pharmacy Technician, or Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration are eligible for this partnership. Transfer guides and additional resources are available to assist in the transition. Black Hawk College participates by awarding credit based upon CLEP scores according to the established college policies.

The Application for Proficiency Credit form allows students to request college credit for prior learning or experience that meets course outcomes. It requires submission of supporting documentation to be evaluated for potential credit award.

Students who have participated in the high school Advanced Placement (AP) program may be eligible to receive credit and advanced placement. Official scores must be on file at BHC. For a list of eligible tests, visit Advanced Placement Testing (AP).
