State champion coach joins BHC
Black Hawk College’s new volleyball coach has found his dream job.
An accomplished high school and club coach, Brian Schubert is ready to share his experience with the Braves.
“Coaching college volleyball has been a dream,” he said. “The QC area has a lot of great volleyball, and Black Hawk College can really benefit from that.”
In 2025, Schubert coached North Scott High School in Eldridge, IA, to a Class 4A State Championship. In 2023 and 2024, he coached Assumption High School in Davenport, IA, to Class 3A state quarterfinal and semifinal appearances.
“We are thrilled that Coach Schubert has joined the department and I am eager to watch him put his stamp on the Braves volleyball program,” said Arnie Chavera, BHC athletic director.
“I am extremely thankful and excited for this opportunity,” Schubert said.
“I have been around volleyball for 37 years as a player, coach, director, mentor and recruiter,” he said. “I have a passion for it.”
Schubert said he wants to develop the BHC program into a national title contender.
“He has high expectations of himself, and he is optimistic of what can be accomplished here at BHC,” Chavera said.
“After winning a high school state title, I am confident that he will bring his successful formula to Black Hawk and build a strong program,” he said.
As a college coach, Schubert also understands the importance of academics for student-athletes.
“Students are here to get an education for a career, and if they get to play a sport, then that’s just the cherry on top,” he said.
About Brian Schubert
During his senior year of high school, Schubert said a volleyball coach “asked some of us basketball players if we have ever considered volleyball.
“He took us to the gym after school, and I was instantly hooked,” he said.
After graduating from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, IA, Schubert played in co-ed leagues in Cedar Rapids then was asked to play on an adult men’s USA club team in the Iowa Region.
In 1991 and 1992, he tried out for the World University Games and Olympic Festival and made the final cut in 1992.
“I eventually met up with guys from the Quad Cities area who wanted to play at a higher level,” he said. “I joined them and we played AA (division) for several years.”
Schubert then met players from Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis who wanted to play even higher.
“I joined them and played Open (division) for several years, placing second in Atlanta 2008,” he said.
In addition to playing after high school, Schubert coached junior high and high school teams for about four years.
“Once I started traveling more to play, I was not coaching,” he said. “Once my body finally said it had enough (in 2008), I started coaching again.”
Schubert now coaches top-tier teams with Iowa Select Volleyball Club in the Quad Cities, trains athletes with private lessons and runs a volleyball recruiting assistant company.
