Choosing Black Hawk College

For Law Ger Htay, choosing Black Hawk College was both a practical and personal decision. He wanted to save money before transferring to a larger university, but what truly drew him to Black Hawk College was its music program. Music had always been a major part of his life, and he knew he wanted to continue pursuing it in college.

Overcoming Early Nerves & Finding Support

One of his biggest fears was simply reaching out to music professor Dr. Leites before starting classes. Looking back, he now sees that phone call as one of his biggest accomplishments because it marked the beginning of a journey that shaped both his education and his confidence.

Throughout his time at Black Hawk College, Dr. Leites became one of his biggest mentors. Law Ger says she guided him through every step of his college experience, from helping him discover his passion for teaching music to supporting him through transfer applications and auditions. Through those conversations, he realized he wanted to continue growing as both a musician and educator. Outside the classroom, he also teaches piano, violin, traditional dance and voice through his church community.

Challenges and Persistence

While at Black Hawk College, Law Ger faced several challenges. As a first-generation college student, navigating financial stress and balancing work with school responsibilities was often difficult. He also says language barriers sometimes made certain classes more challenging. Despite those obstacles, he found support from faculty and staff who encouraged him to keep going.

Community and Involvement

He also found a strong sense of belonging through the Music Makers Club and the art community on campus. Participating in clubs and events allowed him to meet new people, build friendships and step outside of his comfort zone.

Next Steps

After graduation, Law Ger plans to continue his education at Western Illinois University, where he has already been accepted into the dance team. He says he is excited to experience a larger campus community while continuing his music journey.

Reflection

Looking back, Law Ger says Black Hawk College helped him become more confident, outgoing and mature. His advice to future students is: If you are looking for a place that feels like home, Black Hawk College is the place to be.
