Many college graduates express regret or disappointment when looking back on their experience and realizing that they could have been involved much more than they had been. The best way to avoid that regret later is to show up to clubs and events. At Black Hawk College, there are great opportunities to meet artists and work on your artistic endeavors, whatever the method of expression may be. Creative Black Hawk students who are seeking to have careers based within the visual arts have a good selection of courses hone their fundamental skills. Many of the classes in the arts programs at Black Hawk College provide students with ample time, material and guidance to prepare them with useful skills and vocabulary pertaining to the arts. It’s also important to note that students pursuing an associate’s degree will develop a strong portfolio with the help of the art department’s faculty.
Art Collective Club
If a student wanted to get involved artistically without taking classes, they can connect with other students at The Art Collective Club. The art club at Black Hawk College accepts students of any visual art practice seeking a creative campus life. The club is not only seeking traditional artists such as painters, sculptors and drawers, but also needlecrafters, digital artists, printmakers, etc. The club meetings vary each semester. If you are curious, do not hesitate to ask club advisor Professor Terrance Gray when The Art Collective is meeting. In addition to the club, the art studios in Building 4 have lab monitor hours where students will be able to use the space for their projects. Pertaining to performing and theatre arts, BHC students have limited options at the moment. Students with an interest in performing arts should check out the Art Collective in the meantime. Additionally, students interested in the performing arts should email Professor Karen Davis to express their theatrical ambitions. The club encourages students to collaborate and take the initiative to start projects.
Music Ensembles
Musically creative students at Black Hawk are encouraged to audition for music ensembles to ensure the student is placed in a level where they can be challenged to improve. In addition to meeting students at their level, they have several ensembles for students to participate in. Ensemble opportunities include concert band, guitar ensemble, jazz ensemble, string orchestra, chamber singers, concert choir, and the community chorale. A student looking to start their career in music has plenty of ways to get involved.
Music Makers Club
For those who want to be musically involved without enrolling in classes, the Music Makers Club is an excellent opportunity to scratch that itch. Whether you appreciate or create music, the club encourages students to come expand their music knowledge or just hang out with fellow music lovers. The Music Makers club provides an abundance of opportunities, such as trips to concerts and musicals and bringing artists to campus to speak or share their processes. The Music Makers have some very fun, ambitious ideas that creative students would benefit greatly from participating in. For more information speak to club advisor Dr. Irene Lietes.
Black Hawk College is a great place for talented artists to meet with the opportunities provided. Artists would be keen to participate in the aforementioned clubs or events to form important relationships that could result in creative collaboration or lifelong creativity-based friendships.
