Biography
Dr. Mary Barnes-Tilley earned her associate degree in liberal arts from Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. During her first college history course, she discovered her passion for teaching and her desire to pursue a career in community college education. She later earned a bachelor’s degree in government from the University of Texas at Austin.
Barnes-Tilley began her career in higher education as a part-time study skills instructor at Blinn College while completing her master’s degree in political science at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. She later earned her Ph.D. in political science from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.
After completing her doctorate, Barnes-Tilley became a full-time government professor at Blinn College, where she taught for 22 years. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she held numerous leadership roles, including assistant division chair, division chair and assistant instructional dean of social sciences.
Barnes-Tilley continued her administrative leadership at Collin College in Plano, Texas, serving as associate dean and dean of academic affairs and workforce, as well as campus provost. She currently serves as vice president for instruction at Black Hawk College.
As a proud community college graduate, Barnes-Tilley brings a personal and professional commitment to the mission of community colleges. A servant leader, she leads with energy, enthusiasm and collaboration, working closely with faculty, staff and administrators to promote student success and institutional excellence.
