Earn College Credit in High School

Students in a large lecture hall listen intently to a speaker on the stage.

Black Hawk College provides opportunities for high school students in its district to take college-level courses before graduating from high school. These state-supported opportunities are known as dual credit and dual enrollment courses. In partnership with local school districts, Black Hawk College offers these courses in response to the educational needs that school administrators have identified for their students.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is not available to dual credit/dual enrollment students; however, dual credit/dual enrollment classes count as credits attempted/completed and are included when determining a student’s academic progress and eligibility for future financial aid.

College Credit

Dual Enrollment courses are held at Black Hawk College. Only college credit is awarded to the student. Credits appear on the students’ Black Hawk College transcript and can be applied toward degrees and certificates at Black Hawk College or transferred to other colleges or universities.

Career Education Options in High School

Are you a high school student looking for a path to a career, certificate or associate degree? If so, dual credit Career and Technical Education (CTE) is just for you! In addition to college-credit classes, Black Hawk College offers dual credit opportunities in partnership with local high schools and the Area Career Center providing pathways to academic and technical skills that lead to successful careers. Students who are juniors or seniors and meet minimum placement test scores and/or course prerequisites are eligible for dual credit courses. To learn more, contact your high school counselor for details.

Things to consider before enrolling in dual credit

  • Are you a student who is highly motivated, self-disciplined, and able to complete academic work at a collegiate level?
  • The grades earned for dual credit are part of a student’s permanent college transcript. Will you be able to manage your time and stress if you take on an increased workload?
  • Many classes are online, and high school sections may have online components, too. To be successful in online classes, most students set aside time every day to work on assignments.
