The IHSA equestrian team combines competition, learning, and teamwork to create an inclusive experience for riders of all skill levels. From beginners to experienced competitors, team members can participate in both Hunt Seat and Western disciplines, honing their riding abilities while building confidence and adaptability. The program emphasizes personal development and sportsmanship, allowing students to challenge themselves in a supportive atmosphere. As part of the team, riders compete at regional and national events, forming lasting friendships and representing their college with pride and dedication.

Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) levels the playing field into six divisions ranging from beginners to nationally-recognized competitors, where all levels contribute equally to the success of the team. Exhibitors experience the ultimate catch ride, drawing for a horse only minutes before entering the show pen.  Be part of the legacy and join the team to refine your horsemanship ability, increase your competitive edge and build team camaraderie.

Hunter Seat Show Team

This style emphasizes the rider’s position and control while showcasing the horse’s movement and responsiveness. Riders compete in flat classes, which focus on equitation (the rider’s form, effectiveness and harmony with the horse), as well as over-fences classes, where they navigate a series of jumps. Hunt Seat is divided into multiple divisions based on the rider’s experience, ranging from beginner walk-trot to advanced jumping.

Western Show Team

The IHSA Western show team focuses on Western riding disciplines, including Western horsemanship and reining. In horsemanship, riders are judged on their position, control and ability to execute a pattern, while reining showcases advanced maneuvers like spins and sliding stops. Riders compete in divisions based on experience, from beginner walk-jog to advanced reining.

Who can participate in IHSA shows?

All BHC students enrolled in at least 12 credit hours are eligible to participate—no specific major or degree plan is required.

How often do team members compete?

Team members participate in eight to ten meets during the year against colleges competing in Zone 7, Region 5 (central and western Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas). These include: Augustana College, Illinois State University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, Missouri State University, Northwest Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University and Truman State University.

Will I miss time away from classes?

The majority of meets are on Saturdays and Sundays. At most, members might have to leave campus on a Friday afternoon for travel time.

How much does it cost to participate?

Black Hawk College will cover most of the expenses of traveling. Students will be responsible for paying for their meals, their individual IHSA National membership and horse show entry fees. Horses are provided, and BHC has a collection of quality show clothes to use.

I’m currently in high school or attend another college. How can I reach out to coaches for future opportunities?
