For Hispanic Heritage Month, Black Hawk College (BHC) honors and celebrates all of our Hispanic students, staff, faculty and alumni. To kick off our celebration, explore these spotlight stories from across our campus community.
In her first year at Black Hawk College Quad-Cities, Romina Garcia is actively involved at the Quad-Cities campus.
A writing and Spanish tutor and a member of the Student Government Association and its social media group, she plans to transfer to DePaul University in Chicago to major in sports journalism after she graduates with her Associate of Arts this upcoming spring.
Before attending Black Hawk College, her older sister, Renata, encouraged her to get involved on campus. Her sister remains one of her role models because she is ambitious, community-driven and always speaks up for herself.
Romina is ambitiously working toward a career in sports journalism where she can interview, write and create social media content about athletes, particularly in motorsports, tennis and soccer.
Watching sports, pre-game strategies and statistical breakdowns with her dad inspired her, which initially sparked her interest in sports journalism. She said that going into the field as a Hispanic woman is rewarding.
“You rarely ever see women in sports spaces, especially Hispanic women. It is important for me to be able to really go into that as well and be that kind of person,” Romina said.
As she has gotten older, Hispanic representation and Hispanic Heritage Month have taken on deeper meaning for her.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a lot more than just culture. It’s about resistance and hope, and I think that’s what this month means to me now, especially as I’m getting older. I’m realizing the importance of continuing traditions and taking up space,” she said.
