Responding to “Fire Alarm” Alerts (Getting out of a building)
- Take the time to become familiar with the quickest routes to exits from your classrooms and work areas.
- In the event of an alarm or if you smell or see smoke leave the area as quickly as possible.
- Activate the fire alarm if it is not already activated.
- Exit the building and get at least 100 feet away from the entrance.
- Do not use the elevators.
- Do not waste time gathering up belongings.
- Do not try and fight the fire unless you have been trained by the College and have proper equipment.
- Get out and away from the building and wait for notification from a College official that it is safe to return.
EMERGENCY WEATHER ALERT: Severe weather conditions have developed. Go to designated Tornado Shelters.

Responding to “Severe Weather” Alerts (Getting further into a building)
- Get away from exterior windows and doors.
- Move as quickly as possible to the center of the building you are in.
- Sit down on the floor, back to the wall and wait for the “all clear” to be given by a College official.
- Knowledge of the area is good information. Know the quickest route to a safe location.
SHELTER-IN-PLACE: Environmental emergency on campus. Close doors and windows and stay in place. SHELTER-IN-PLACE!

“Responding to a “Shelter in Place” Alert (Locking down right where you are)
- Assess your location for security potential.
- Lock the door of the room you are in if you can.
- Turn off the lights and any electronic equipment. Make the room look unoccupied.
- Barricade the door with desks or office equipment if possible.
- Do not open the door for someone else unless you are absolutely sure who it is.
- Stay down and away from the door and any widows.
- Remain where you are until you are located by the police.
If you encounter a police officer during a Shelter in Place emergency
- Make sure your hands are empty and visible to the officer.
- Do what you are told without hesitation.
- Do not argue or ask questions.
- Give direct answers to any questions the officer asks.
- If you are told to leave do so quickly and with your hands empty.
