Useful Tips for Out-of-State and International Students

As an international or out-of-state student, you may be looking for tips to help you navigate and thrive during your first semester here at Black Hawk College. Here are some essential suggestions to set you up for success.

  1. Take Care of Financial Aid Requirements

Before your first week of classes, make sure you’ve completed your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). For international students who have recently become U.S. citizens, there are additional steps to keep in mind:

    • Request a new Social Security card.
    • Update your citizenship status.
    • While you don’t need to “correct” a previously submitted FAFSA after becoming a U.S. citizen, the Financial Aid Office may request documentation to verify your status. Be prepared to provide a copy of your Certificate of Naturalization (N-550), Certificate of Citizenship or U.S. passport.
  1. Get Involved on Campus

One of the best ways to learn, grow and adapt to your new environment is by getting involved in school activities. Joining clubs, attending events or participating in student organizations can help you:

    • Meet new people and make friends.
    • Learn about campus resources and opportunities.
    • Discover tips and advice from fellow students who’ve been in your shoes.

Take advantage of the many opportunities offered on campus. It’s up to you to make the most of them!

Additional Tips to Consider:

  • Explore Housing Options: If you haven’t already secured housing, investigate both campus housing and community options. Make sure your living arrangements are comfortable and suitable for studying.
  • Familiarize Yourself with the Area: Get to know your new surroundings. Locate essential places like grocery stores, banks and healthcare facilities. This can help you feel more at home.
