The Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) Department of Black Hawk College is committed to the mission of “Improving Life Through Learning.” This year, our exciting Lifelong Learner Conference, has been specifically designed for anyone 55 years or better; but all learners are welcome. In a constantly maturing and changing society, this conference is focused on building knowledge and sharing ideas that are valuable to the personal growth and success of all who attend.

Enjoy good conversation, new information, lunch and exhibits that have been selected for lifelong learners in the Quad Cities community.

Mindful Meditation and Memory Benefits
Presenter: Dr. Deborah Mizener

Dr. Mizener will provide current research findings of various contemplative practices and their benefits to our memory and emotional well-being. She will share the benefits of meditation and draw upon her own personal experience as well. Join Dr. Mizener as she demonstrates simple meditation techniques and basic breathing.


A Website for Everyone
Presenter: Nora VanSpeybroeck, MBA

There is a website for everything. Nora will demonstrate how to search the web and how to navigate various websites such as Shutterfly (image publishing service), Switchboard (internet phonebook), Google maps/Google Earth, etc. Learn how to share your talents on Pinterest or explore travel or art websites. This session will benefit the novice user as well as the experienced one. If you have a Smartphone or iPad/tablet, bring it with you.


Nutrition for Optimal Health
Presenter: Chelsie Kirschbaum, MS, CHES, Wellness Coach

Learn about ways to improve your nutrition for an optimal state of health. This session will include topics such as nutrition recommendations, impacts of proper nutrition on health, and tips/tricks for healthier eating.


Pets – A Positive Impact on Happiness and Health
Presenter: Vicki Nimmo, Volunteer at Caring Canines-UnityPoint Health-Trinity

This session is intended to highlight the benefits of pet ownership (with special attention to dogs) for health and happiness. Information about how pet therapy can benefit individuals with health concerns, how dog obedience training can strengthen the pet/owner relationship, and how dog agility offers the option of involvement and health benefits to pets as well as owners.


 Dr. Deborah Mizener
Dr. Mizener received her Doctorate in Applied Psychology, Counseling from the University of Toronto, Canada. She completed a specialty in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She has worked in the field of psychology and education for 30 years as a researcher, psychologist and school counselor in several countries. She attended a Health and Happiness Retreat at the Bodhi Meditation Vancouver where she learned how to deepen her practice.

Nora VanSpeybroeck, MBA
Nora VanSpeybroeck holds a Masters in Business Administration from St. Ambrose University and has vast experience in sales and marketing. She has been an instructor for the Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE) Department and the Business Training Center (BTC) of Black Hawk College for over 19 years teaching computer classes for the public as well as customized training for businesses. She also teaches classes for College for Kids and the Lifelong Learner program.

Chelsie Kirschbaum, MS, CHES, Wellness Coach
Chelsie is a Wellness Coach at UnityPoint Health–Trinity and is certified as a Health Education Specialist through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Health and Human Physiology and received her master’s degree in Health Education from Kaplan University. She values the relationships she builds with her clients and enjoys helping others find happiness by providing the support, education, and resources that are necessary for optimal health and wellness.

Vicki Nimmo, Volunteer at Caring Canines-UnityPoint Health-Trinity
Vicki retired from the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency where she was a school psychologist. She is a member of the Peoria Obedience Training Club, Scott County Kennel Club, Caring Canines (Unity Point) and Alliance of Therapy Dogs.

Online registration is not available for this conference. There is limited seating so early registration is encouraged.

The registration deadline is Tuesday, September 19.

The conference and lunch will be held in the Sustainable Technologies Building (STB) which is by the wind turbine. Check-in will take place at the entrance between Building 2 and STB. There will be signs on the building. Sessions will be held in the STB – Rooms 113 and 114. Parking is located in Lot #1 off 70th Street.

You will receive a conference badge when you check-in. Your badge is your ticket to all sessions and lunch. 

Conference registration includes beverages in the morning and a lunch catered by Mark Mueller from At Your Service Catering (meat and vegetarian lasagna, tossed salad, bread sticks, lemon bars and brownies).

5.5 CEs will be awarded to Illinois Social Workers and Illinois Nursing Home Administrators. Please ask for the CE Request Form when checking in. Return the completed form to the PaCE Department staff at the end of the conference. Certificates will be mailed to the address on that form.
