Program Description

Food Service Sanitation Manager

This class uses ServSafe (an ANSI-CFP accredited exam provider) which meets Illinois and Iowa state requirements for the FSSMC exam. Students are given the option of purchasing the ServSafe Manager Book (English or Spanish) for $51. Books may be purchased before class begins. Books may not be returned for a refund. All book sales are final. Separate payment (checks payable to Black Hawk College – no cash please) for optional book if the book is purchased at the first class. The certification examination will be given at the end of the last class and will take approximately two hours. Please read all of the information regarding a class to know whether you will be taking an online exam or paper exam. Class will break for a 30-minute lunch each day (on your own). Please bring a current photo ID to the last class in order to take the exam.

Accelerated Food Service Sanitation Manager

If you have successfully completed the food service manager certification before, this could be the class for you. This class will take the food service sanitation manager material and condense it into a shorter amount of time – 1 day instead of 2. In addition, you will take the exam online at the end of the class so you will get your results immediately. If you are short on time, feel like you know what is required of you as a food service sanitation manager, and are comfortable with computers, then this class is for you. Class will break for a 30-minute lunch (on your own). Please bring a current photo ID in order to take the exam. The optional book may be purchased before the class begins for $51. All book sales are final – no refunds allowed.

Food Handler Training

Per the Illinois Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act (410 ILCS 625), amended per SB1495, all food handlers – other than someone holding a FSSMC license – must receive basic safe food handling principles training within 30 days after employment. The training certificate for this category is valid for three years. You will attend a 2-hour class followed by a 40-question assessment.

Per the Illinois Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act (410 ILCS 625), amended per SB1495, all food handlers – other than someone holding a FSSMC license – must receive basic safe food handling principles training within 30 days after employment. The training certificate for this category is valid for three years. You will attend a 2-hour class followed by a 45-question assessment. The ServSafe Food Handler Guide and assessment are included with the cost of the class. Please bring a current photo ID to class.

Online

ServSafe offers the Food Handler Course and Assessment online. With this option, you can take the course and assessment in the computer lab. There is no instructor in the lab. You work on your own through the course and assessment and have the option of taking the online program in English or Spanish. Please bring ear buds with you as to not disturb others and a current photo ID to class.
