Program Description

EKG Technician

Prerequisite: Ability to assist peers onto a table during labs. Must be willing to participate with giving and receiving 12-lead hookups. 

Topics include: 12-Lead EKG, set-up in a hospital or office setting, anatomy of the heart, physiology and medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics and legal aspects of patient contact, blood-borne pathogens, and heart medications.

Before the first class, purchase required textbook at www.bhc.edu/bookstore.

The National Certified EKG Technician (NCET) certification exam is available upon successful completion of the class through National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Telemetry & Holter Monitor for Beginners

Prerequisite: High school diploma or equivalent and completion of the EKG Technician course.
Despite the fact that the need for skilled healthcare professionals with training and expertise in electrocardiography and cardiac monitoring has never been greater, the supply of such allied health professionals has never been more limited.
The emphasis in this course will be to expand upon the “snapshot” 12-lead EKGs and focus on real-time electrocardiogram monitoring, encompassing all areas of hospital and extended care unit-based cardiac observation. This includes monitoring for arrhythmia, ischemia, ST segment and QT interval changes and/or abnormalities in varying types of patients. Electrode placement and monitoring of single and multiple lead recordings will be another focus.  Required textbook from the EKG Technician course.
