1. What is the ARP?


The American Rescue Plan (ARP) is federal legislation which provides a variety of financial support to individuals and organizations affected by the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. One part of this federal program allocates money to colleges and universities, and portions of this allocation can be awarded to students who are experiencing financial expenses due to COVID-19 and its related impacts.

2. Who can apply for a CARES grant?

Applications for the Black Hawk College CARES Grant (Spring 2022) have now closed. Additional CARES Grant funding is not anticipated.

3. What kinds of expenses are covered by this grant?

Funds from the BHC CARES Grant may be used for expenses related to a student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care) or child care.

4. How much can I apply for?

Qualifying students enrolled in college credit coursework can apply for up to $2,000 (maximum grant amount based on enrollment).

Qualifying students enrolled in non-credit career programs can apply for up to $500.

6. After I apply, how do I find out if I received an emergency grant?

Applicants enrolled in college credit coursework will be notified via their myBlackHawk email within 10 business days after receipt of a completed BHC CARES Grant Student Certification form. Certification forms are reviewed in the order received.

7. If I am approved, how will I receive my emergency grant funds?

The way students receive their emergency grant funds will depend on the type of program they are enrolled in, and possibly their age.

8. Does the money need to be repaid?

No, the money received through this BHC CARES Grant fund does not need to be repaid.

9. Would this funding reduce my financial aid?

No, the BHC CARES Grant funding does not impact your eligibility for other financial aid and it is a one-time grant for the semester of application.

13. I previously attended Black Hawk College and already received a BHC CARES Grant at that time. Can I fill out a BHC CARES Grant application for the Spring 2022 semester as well?

Yes, qualifying students may apply for a BHC CARES Grant even if they were awarded a BHC CARES Grant at Black Hawk College during a previous semester.
