Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy

Financial aid recipients must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) towards a degree or certificate in order to continue receiving financial aid (including student loans) at Black Hawk College.

Standards

GPA Requirement – 2.0 Cumulative

A student must earn and maintain a 2.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA).

Completion Rate – 67% Passed

A student must pass at least 67% of all credit hours attempted.  Transfer credit hours and withdrawn courses are included in this calculation.

Maximum Time Frame – 150% Limit

A student cannot attempt more than 150% of the minimum credit hours required for their degree/certificate. All coursework attempted, including transfer credit hours and withdrawn courses, are included in this calculation.

These standards are cumulative and include all periods of enrollment at Black Hawk College, including semesters when the student did not receive financial aid. A student’s SAP status is evaluated after the completion of each semester.

Additional information can be found in the SAP policy and FAQ documents:

This SAP policy is based on standards established by federal regulations and state policy governing financial aid programs (HEA Sec. 484(c), 34 CFR 668.16(e), 34 CFR 668.32(f), 34 CFR 668.34).

How to Check Your Status

Financial aid recipients who do not meet SAP standards at the end of the semester will be notified at their myBlackHawk student email.

To check your current status, log into your myBlackHawk account. Under Student > Financial Aid select “Academic Progress Status”.

How to Appeal Your Dismissal

Students who had mitigating circumstances may submit an appeal in order to continue receiving financial aid at Black Hawk College. Appeals should be submitted prior to the term of requested reinstatement – limited exceptions will be considered.

Once a completed appeal is submitted, allow 10 business days for review. Notifications of appeal approval/denial will be sent to the student’s myBlackHawk email.
