Black Hawk College is hosting a series of virtual orientation sessions for students from both campuses looking to begin classes. The series is called “How to @ the Hawk” and covers topics like advising, paying for college, leadership and academics.

Learn how to maximize BHC library resources to select, find and check out a library book and familiarize yourself with campus databases.

Be a Leader

When: TBA

Join us for a five-session virtual series to improve and develop leadership skills to use in campus clubs/organizations, the workplace and daily life.

The first 25 enrollees will receive a $10 gift card to Amazon. All participants who complete three out of the five schedule sessions will receive a free T-shirt and leadership certificate at the end of the series.

 Smart Start

When: Virtual or on-campus events will be May 15 – July 15. Choose a date and time upon registration.

Get ready for the fall semester with BHC Smart Start!

BHC Smart Start will cover basic information to help students succeed, including:

  • Meet your BHC assigned advisor
  • Introduction to financial aid and payment information
  • Difference between career/technical degrees and certificates and transfer degrees
  • How to read our Fall 2021 schedule and the types of instruction available for Fall 2021 (in-person, online, hybrid, etc.)
  • Registration for Fall 2021 classes
  • Time management (how many credit hours is realistic)
  • How to locate information on student resources

Learn best practices to assist with evaluating and implementing changes in your environment.

Meet & Exceed Faculty Expectations

Hear from instructors in math, science, English, communication, health sciences, art, business, social and behavioral sciences, history and MORE!

Get information on how to use a syllabus, faculty expectations and strategies for academic success. Ask questions and get to know the faculty and other students.

All participants will receive a free T-shirt and lanyard. A Zoom link will be provided 24 hours before the session.

After the session, complete an online resource scavenger hunt and you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of four $50 gift cards for the Hawk’s Hub or Amazon.

Learn strategies to help you succeed in online coursework and understand how the online experience differs from the residential classroom. This online session is open to all prospective and current students.

Navigating Canvas

Canvas is the software that BHC instructors use to teach online and hybrid classes. Not sure how to use Canvas? Join us for a step-by-step overview on how to use Canvas as a BHC student.

Paying for College

This virtual information session is for all prospective students and will present options for paying for college and assist you in finding answers to your finance related questions with our financial aid staff!

Military-related students can find dedicated support in this session which will feature a breakout session conducted by our Military and Veterans Coordinator.

Manage Your Time
