When you attend a New Student Advising and Registration Session (NewSTARS) you create your first semester schedule utilizing online tools with the help of Advising staff. An advisor will be a key part of your educational journey and you should plan to meet prior to registering for each semester.
WHAT TO EXPECT
NewSTARS topics include how to use myBlackHawk, course load and time commitments, academic policies and financial aid policies. Students combine their placement assessment scores with their academic program requirements, register for classes and receive details on post-registration steps. Students are introduced to Advising staff and their potential classmates.
Sessions are led by advisors in a small group setting. You must have already completed placement testing and the online New Student Orientation before attending NewSTARS.
Students should meet individually with an advisor, rather than attend NewSTARS, if they:
- Intend to enroll in welding classes or CNA training OR
- Successfully completed at least nine (9) credit hours of college level coursework at another college or university OR were dual-enrolled students in high school and also completed at least (9) credit hours after graduating from high school. Bring your unofficial college transcripts to your advising meeting. Appointments are recommended.
Your NewSTARS session at East Campus can be scheduled by contacting Advising after you have completed the online New Student Orientation.
