BHC hunt seat riders ranked No. 2 in region

Congratulations to the Black Hawk College Hunt Seat Equestrian Team for finishing Fall 2022 ranked No. 2 in the region!

BHC riders competed in five Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) shows against a dozen four-year schools from across the Midwest. Black Hawk College is the only two-year school in Zone 7 Region 5 and is a relative newcomer to hunt seat competitions – the college’s hunt seat program began in Fall 2018.

“This has been a wonderful semester for the Hunt Seat Show Team,” said Selena Finn, coach and equestrian science instructor. “From the absolute best students and historical athletic moments to the remarkable passion that fuels this team.”

Hunt seat riders compete in seven divisions depending on their level of riding experience. Classes consist of riding on the flat (riders execute specific gaits on the rail) and over fences (riders exhibit their horse’s skill over an elevated jump). Riders who place in the top six in their class accumulate points individually as well as for the team.

In Spring 2023, BHC hunt seat riders will compete in two regular shows then host a Regional show all in one weekend.

“I am looking forward to finishing the season strong in the spring,” Finn said.

Here are the individual rider placings for the Southern Illinois University Carbondale IHSA Horse Shows two-day show Oct. 1-2. Out of 12 teams, the BHC Hunt Seat Equestrian Team was the Reserve Champion High Point Team for the second show and Abby Schuning tied for overall High Point rider.
