New women’s soccer team gets first win

13 women's soccer players and 1 coach

The Black Hawk College women’s soccer team made history Sept. 23, 2021, with a 9-0 win over Illinois Valley Community College. It was the first win for the team since beginning competition one month earlier.

“We got our first win of the year and for the program!” tweeted Abbie Metz, the Braves’ first-ever women’s soccer head coach.

The college announced in February 2020 that it was starting a men’s and women’s soccer program thanks to a generous donation from alumni Bob and Blenda Ontiveros. The teams began competing in August 2021.

“What a day for Black Hawk College women’s soccer this afternoon! We had six different players score in our 9-0 victory!” Metz said. “Words can’t describe this feeling!”

BHC athletic director Arnie Chavera was equally excited.

“I am thrilled to see Coach Metz and our ladies get their first win! I saw many smiles on that field after the game,” he said. “They have overcome many roster challenges with injuries and quarantines and have remained competitive.”

Making the first win even better – it was a home game for the Braves.

Both BHC soccer teams play home games at the Alleman Athletic Complex in Moline. Check the Events Calendar for upcoming games.
