New BHC scholarship honors the late Chuck Deahl

head & shoulders shot of Chuck DeahlChuck Deahl always believed in Black Hawk College, especially the East Campus. The Galva resident showed his love for the college by serving on the BHC East Foundation board for 10 years.

“We know how important it is to have a community college in our area,” said his wife, Sharon Deahl. “If there’s a way we can help students pursue an education, we wanted to do that.”

After he passed away in September 2018, Sharon decided to create at scholarship at Black Hawk College in his memory.

She recently donated $25,000 to the BHC East Foundation to establish the Chuck Deahl Memorial Scholarship.

“I think Chuck would be very happy with how we are honoring his legacy and helping future students,” Sharon said.

“Uncle Chuck was a Black Hawk College supporter through and through and very passionate about the mission of the East Campus,” said Jodee Werkheiser, his niece and an East Campus computer science applications professor.

“He was a true believer in education,” she added.

Because the Deahl scholarship fund is an endowment, normally the first scholarship would be awarded after the principal donation earns interest for two years. But in order for students to begin benefitting immediately, Sharon Deahl decided to contribute additional funds so the scholarship can be awarded in 2020-21 and 2021-22.

Students can apply for 2020-21 BHC East Foundation scholarships from March 15 until May 15.

To commemorate Chuck’s dedication to BHC students, the community is welcome to donate to the scholarship fund in his memory.
