As National Nurses Week comes to a close it is a great time to honor the nurses in our community.
Started in 1993, the purpose of National Nurses Week is to celebrate the nursing profession and recognize the contributions and positive of impact of nurses.

BHC Nursing Programs
Black Hawk College’s nursing programs help meet the great demand of area employers for nurses and prepare students for rewarding careers helping patients.
Nursing Health Sciences Career Programs at Black Hawk College include the Associate Degree Nursing (RN) Program, Practical Nursing Certificate (LPN) and the Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program.
“Employers looking to employ nurses tell us that they want BHC students because they are better prepared, better organized and better at thinking critically,” said Trudy Starr, Department Chair and Professor of Nursing.
The opportunities for nurses are vast, and can fulfill any health care interest. Nurses work in hospitals, home care, hospice, nursing homes and more. Starr noted after working as a nurse for a year, nurses can join a travel nursing agency which allows them to work in various states and see the country.

Health Sciences Career Programs
BHC health sciences programs allow students to get the education they need to succeed in a rapidly growing field. The U.S. Department of Labor says health care occupations will add more jobs than any other group of occupations by 2024.
In addition to nursing programs, Black Hawk College’s health sciences programs also include programs that prepare students to become:
- emergency medical technicians
- paramedics
- physical therapist assistants
- surgical technologists
- medical assistants, and
- medical billing and coding professionals.
Health sciences students learn from faculty with many years of practical clinical experience 
who are committed to helping students succeed.
The Health Sciences Center is a three-story building on the Quad-Cities Campus that was completed in 2015. The facility is a combination of traditional classrooms and hands-on lab areas.
Students in every health sciences program are also able to gain practical experience through Black Hawk College’s clinical partners.
