QC student leaders: it’s time to apply for SGA

Want to make a difference during your time at Black Hawk College’s Quad-Cities Campus? Apply for the Student Government Association (SGA), where you could do just that!

SGA is accepting online applications through March 29, 2019. Interviews to select SGA senators will be April 10.

Up to 14 senators, including executive officers, make up Quad-Cities Campus SGA. The association:

  • Enhances the quality of college life for Black Hawk College students.
  • Governs student organizations.
  • Provides activities, volunteer and leadership opportunities on campus.

SGA encourages you to apply if you are open, friendly, approachable, interested in meeting new people, enthusiastic, an effective communicator and reliable.

Student Government Senator activities include:

  • SGA meetings – participate in senate meetings and committee meetings
  • Surveys – help facilitate surveys each semester to get student input
  • On-campus events – help with events like club/organization fairs, Fall Fest and Spring Fling.
  • Off-campus events – be the face of Black Hawk College at volunteer and fundraising events as a student representative
  • SGA retreat – attend the annual retreat where you collectively set goals for the upcoming academic year
  • Board meetings – attend Quad-Cities Board of Trustee Meetings to update trustees on the status of SGA goals

Senators share SGA experiences

Amadou Abasse Ndiaye

Amadou Abasse Ndiaye wearing glasses and blue shirt SGA senator Amadou Abasse Ndiaye, of Moline, applied for SGA because of the opportunity to share his experiences, get involved, and help make the campus more attractive.

Ndiaye is a sophomore earning an Associate in Arts degree who will transfer to Northern Illinois University to study political science this year. He enjoys helping plan and coordinate SGA events.

“My favorite part of being member of the SGA is to run events that bring all the students body together and make them feel part of the community,” Ndiaye said.

Whether you join SGA or another organization, Ndiaye highly encourages students to get involved on campus. He said involvement helps you grow as a person and is great for your resume as well.

Johanna Lopez

She is a sophomore earning her Associate in Arts. She plans to transfer to Illinois State University to study fashion merchandising.

Lopez encourages students to apply because you make new friends and make a difference. She also noted that it is great to have on your scholarship and college applications.

“I don’t want to just go to class and go home straight afterwards,” Lopez said. “I want the full college experience and to make a positive impact.”

Seth Vergeyle

Seth Vergeyle smiling in front of grey background, wearing black BHC shirt SGA senator Seth Vergeyle, of Moline, said his favorite part about being in SGA is meeting new people. He joined SGA because he was looking for a productive way to spend time between classes.

Vergeyle is a sophomore earning his Associate in Arts who will transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree in information systems.

“I have learned that a leader is not just a person that others can look up to as they succeed,” he said. “A leader is someone who can push those around them up and cheer them on as they encourage those around them to succeed.”

Leadership opportunities within SGA include chairing committees, and Vergeyle served as the chair of the JDRF One Walk at Black Hawk College. JDRF is a global organization that funds type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Fundraising walks help support the cause.
