Career skills sessions can help you succeed

Black Hawk College Career Services now offers skills sessions to help job seekers and students planning for their futures.

Sessions are free and available to students, educators and community members by request. They are designed to be 45 minutes long but Career Services can adjust them based on need.

Skills sessions are open to both BHC campuses, Quad-Cities Campus in Moline and East Campus in Galva. The following skills sessions are available:

Career Discovery and Exploration

Get started on the journey of finding your dream job. This session highlights the importance of job shadowing, talking to professionals and researching online to learn more about jobs you find appealing to see if they are a fit.

Selling Yourself

Understand how to best sell yourself and make connections. Advocating for yourself is key to success. Learn how to highlight your marketable skills, about crafting an elevator speech, and the importance of a professional appearance.

Personal Branding

Creating and maintaining a personal brand can help you be successful in your job search. Your brand is what people think of when they see or hear you, and it encompasses everything from the way you speak to the content you share on social media. Having a positive brand will help you succeed.

Applying for a Job

Learn best practices for finding and applying for jobs. Hear more about cover letters, résumés and job searches. This session covers tips on maximizing your strengths through the power of words. Learn about job search sites that can help you find great positions to apply for.

Getting the Job

This session focuses on how to have a successful job interview and following up with your interviewer. Carefully research a company before your interview and be ready to discuss specific examples of your past work. You will also get information on shaking hands and how making eye contact impacts your interview.

Barriers to Success

A variety of barriers might keep you from being successful in your job search. Learn about barriers and community resources that can help. Lack of access to internet, transportation or childcare are just a few examples of barriers. The right resources can help you overcome barriers that impact you.

Career Services also offers career assessments, job search and application assistance, mock interviews, internship help and career counseling.
