Monthly safety tip from your Black Hawk College Safety Committee
May 6-12 is National Nurse Week. It is a week dedicated to acknowledging and honoring nurses for all their hard work and dedication. It is appropriate to honor nurses this month. Florence Nightingale’s birthday was May 12, 1820. She has been credited as being the creator of modern, professional nursing. In 1860, Florence Nightingale laid the foundation for professional nursing with the establishment of her nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. It was the first secular nursing school in the world.
Nursing and medicine has come along way since Florence Nightingale’s time. In the late 1800s, first aid kits used by Florence Nightingale would have contained large quantities of soap and scrubbing brushes, along with bandages and other medicines that may have been available. With these items Florence could clean the wards in which they worked, as well as clean and dress the wounds of the injured. There were no sterile dressings or antiseptics available to prevent infectious disease.
Black Hawk College has modern first aid kits available for you to treat minor injuries or ailments. Do you know where the nearest first aid kit is to you? There is at least one kit in every college building. Contact Risk Management for first aid kits locations.
Kits are stocked according to OSHA requirements. If you feel there should be items added to your nearest first aid kit, email your request to RiskManagement@bhc.edu.
