Nursing students collect 2,000+ pounds of donations

During the Spring 2011 semester, the Black Hawk College chapter of the National Student Nurses Association collected more than 2,000 pounds of items for shelters in the Quad Cities.

BHC students and employees donated clothing, toys, toiletries and kitchen items. The response was so great that the conference room designated to store the donated items had to be emptied several times.

Nursing students delivered the donations to Winnie’s Place women’s shelter, King’s Harvest homeless ministry in Davenport, Iowa; theplace2b center for homeless and displaced youth at the YWCA in Rock Island, Ill.; and Christian Care rescue mission and domestic violence shelter in Rock Island. Ill.

Pictured surrounded by a portion of the donations are, from left to right, nursing students Joli Sloter, Andrea Laermans, Sonia Herrera, Tabetha Voeltz and Jolene Anderson.

Several people not in the photo helped deliver the donations. They included nursing students Kaitlin Peterson, Brittnee Ayers, Sanela Pilipovic, Jamie Austin, Amber Mourning and Amy Kohl and assistant professor Cynthia Becker and her husband.
