BHC wins Region IV golf title, coach of the year

Black Hawk College men’s golf team has won the 2010 Region IV golf title for the seventh time in eight years. This achievement qualifies the team to participate in the NJCAA National Golf Tournament May 15-21, 2011, in Scottsboro, Ala.

Head golf coach Gary Huber also was named National Junior College Athletic Association Region IV Coach of the Year in Division 2.

Golfers Ryan Schlueter of Davenport, Owen Bell of Davenport, Eric Barnet of Moline, Mike Maller of Davenport and Shane Creighton of Monmouth competed Oct. 7-9 in the Region IV Championship at Prairie View Golf Course in Byron, Ill.

Schlueter was the medalist of the 15-team tournament, averaging 72 strokes. Bell earned 4th place with an average of 76 strokes. Barnet earned 6th place with an average of 77 strokes and Maller earned 14th place by averaging 78 for each of the three rounds.

The Black Hawk College team shattered the three-round Region record of 920 that was set in the fall of 2007 by another BHC team. The current team shot a 909.

Schlueter shot a record 218 strokes to earn medalist and beat the previous Region record shot in 2007 by Black Hawk’s former record holder, alumnus Matt Skahill.

Schlueter also kept the medalist streak alive with Black Hawk College golfers. Matt Skahill was medalist in 2007, Casey Pyne earned medalist honors in 2008, and Connor Gillund earned last year’s honors.
