Terry Rathje - It's not what you think (web)

“It’s not what you think” – mixed media

The ArtSpace Gallery at Black Hawk College is exhibiting “Mining for Obtainium,” a collection of 2-D and 3-D artwork by Terry Rathje, from Tuesday, Feb. 17 to Friday, March 13.

Rathje is an assistant professor of graphic design at Western Illinois University. He takes the discarded — such as license plates, doll houses and window screens — and builds assemblages that may force many to reexamine their definition of art.

Everyone is invited to reception with the artist from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19.

The ArtSpace Gallery is located on the first floor of Building 4 at the Quad-Cities Campus, 6600 34th Ave., Moline.

Come to a free self-defense training demonstration from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 5. Kevin Anderson, MMA fighter and brown belt, will teach self-defense using proper form and technique with punches, kicks, judo throws and take-downs!

Quad-Cities Campus faculty and staff will conduct a panel discussion on “Mythbusting Feminism” at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5 in Building 1, Room 306 (theatre).

Panelists will discuss common myths, perceptions and misconceptions about feminism, and what it means to be a feminist. Join us for what should prove to be a lively and informative session.

The ICC is a required monthly combined workshop and roundtable meeting where Quad-Cities Campus club representatives gather to collaborate, support one another, share information and gain leadership skills.

Two (2) club members are required to attend each ICC meeting. If club membership is under five (5), then one (1) representative is required to attend. Clubs who do not attend meetings will be unable to request budgetary funds.

ICC meets the first Thursday of every month at 2 p.m. beginning Feb. 5 in the Restaurant (Building 4, second floor).

The BHC NSNA Trivia Night will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 6 at the Quad-Cities Campus in Building 4 in the Hawk’s Nest (second floor).

All Black Hawk College students, faculty, staff and the public are invited to participate!

Doors will open at 6 p.m., trivia will start at 6:30 p.m.

Tables of up to 8 people. Participants must be at least 13 years old.

Cost is $7 per person ($5 if registered by March 3). Register here.

Beverages will be for sale. You are welcome to bring food and snacks.

Join us to test your knowledge on many categories and to participate in a silent auction! Free kids activities provided. There will be a movie, games and coloring supplies.

There will be eight rounds of 10 questions each and two bonus rounds if a tie occurs.

Trivia Rules

Proceeds benefit the National Student Nurses’ Association in providing scholarships to offset the cost and materials needed for schooling.

Krisann Bergo, assistant professor of sociology, will give a talk on “Zombie Feminism: What Happens After the ‘Walking Dead’ Apocalypse” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 10 in Building 1, Room 306 (theatre).

Using “The Walking Dead” as a case study, Bergo will examine media portrayals of gender roles during apocalyptic situations. She will explore whether or not such portrayals represent a realistic or likely depiction of human behavior.

WARNING: There will be spoilers up through the current season/episode!

Turney mitten (web)The ArtSpace Gallery at Black Hawk College is exhibiting the photography of Robert Turney from Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 10.

“Photographing found objects in an environment that isolates the uniqueness of each subject has always interested me,” Turney says.

“This series, 44 Gloves and a Mitten, photographed using the wet-plate collodian photographic process, continues this conceit.

“Lost, discarded, left to the elements and time, what do these gloves look like when rescued from the sides of highways, alleys or city sidewalks? In a very real sense, I consider these 44 gloves and a mitten to be portraits.”

Everyone is invited to closing reception with the artist from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, April 9.

The meetings will provide support, academic planning and an opportunity to network with other students pursuing the same goals. Come to one meeting or all of them! Different information will be discussed at each one. Nan Reddy and/or Karen Dugan, educational advisors, will facilitate the meetings.

The next meeting will be Thursday, March 26 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The meetings will be in Building 1, Room 383 (conference room above Advising in the First Stop Center).

Nnenna Freelon is world-renowned jazz singer, composer, producer, arranger, actress and six-time Grammy Award nominee.

Freelon has toured with Ray Charles, Ellis Marsalis, Al Jarreau, George Benson and other great jazz artists.

Her visit is sponsored by Quad City Arts Visiting Artist Series.

There will be a reception and awards presentation from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, April 17. Everyone is invited to meet the student artists and enjoy refreshments.

Are you planning to apply to the Associate Degree Nursing Program or Practical Nursing Certificate Program and are currently enrolled at BHC? Then you should attend a Planning and Information for Nursing Students (PINS) meeting.

The meetings will provide support, academic planning and an opportunity to network with other students pursuing the same goals. Come to one meeting or all of them! Different information will be discussed at each one. Nan Reddy and/or Karen Dugan, educational advisors, will facilitate the meetings.

The ICC is a required monthly combined workshop and roundtable meeting where Quad-Cities Campus club representatives gather to collaborate, support one another, share information and gain leadership skills.

Two (2) club members are required to attend each ICC meeting. If club membership is under five (5), then one (1) representative is required to attend. Clubs who do not attend meetings will be unable to request budgetary funds.
