Kari’s Bio
I am the manager of the Student Success Center and director of the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program. I grew up in Wisconsin and got my bachelor’s degree in art therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Superior (very cold up there!). I have a master’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa. I worked in human services for more than 20 years and have provided in-home family therapy, worked in a residential center for developmentally disabled adults, at a youth shelter, and as an investigator for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. My favorite job was running a children’s advocacy center where I conducted the forensic interviews of child abuse victims and did multi-disciplinary training around the state of Illinois.

My entrance into the field of education came through the Head Start program in Scott County, Iowa, where I was the program manager for several sites in Davenport and Bettendorf. I have been with Black Hawk College since January 2006, and I have decided this is where I need to be. The TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program is a great opportunity for me to assist students with their academic success and to find ways to meet the needs of such a diverse population. I truly enjoy my work here and hope that more students take advantage of what the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program has to offer.

Yen’s bio
I joined the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program as the learning skills advisor in November 2010. I have strong personal ties to TRiO because I was a participant in Talent Search, Upward Bound and SSS.

I earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and speech communication and a master’s degree in education from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. I spent two years working in the Academic Success Center at Iowa State University as a tutor manager and two years serving as a community director and director of student activities at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. I am glad to be at Black Hawk College and look forward to assisting SSS students in any capacity.

Jaime’s Bio
I earned my bachelor’s degree in social work from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa. My initial position in the field of human service was at Intouch Day Center for Older Adults, working as a driver/aid. One of my favorite positions was as a temporary activity aid at Vera French Pine Knoll, in Davenport, Iowa. I joined the Black Hawk College Opportunity Program staff in September 1992. I worked with individuals who received public assistance from the state of Illinois and were seeking education. Over the nine years I served in that capacity I worked with approximately 3,500 clients. I joined the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) staff in July 2000. My primary responsibility is to advise and transfer Black Hawk College students to colleges and universities of their choice. I complete lots of paperwork. My favorite responsibility is to identify potential participants, let them know about our services, and assist them to take advantage of this great opportunity. Outside of work I like to read, walk, sample foreign beers and explore the world in which I live. I have two grown sons.

Marcy’s Bio
I am the office assistant in the Student Success Center and spend most of my time working in the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program. I have worked at Black Hawk College since 1984, in many departments, so I know many of the staff and faculty and have a good understanding of what goes on at the college. I enjoy working with students and can personally identify and relate to the difficulties that may arise from being a first-generation college student as I was one myself.

It was an honor to serve as an advisor for Phi Theta Kappa honor society for five years, and in 2002, I received a Paragon award that is given to new advisors. I received my bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University in 2003.

Dan’s Bio
I am the learning skills specialist for the Student Success Center. I have been helping students receive education and training for more than 25 years. I have a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Western Illinois University. I was a high school teacher and coach for five years before I came to Black Hawk College. While at Black Hawk College I have worked as a case manager for an educational welfare-to-work program. I have worked with inmates at the correctional center and as an educational and career advisor. I have worked with students in Rock Island County high schools to help them prepare for future employment. I would like to help you graduate and/or transfer through the TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program. If you need a tutor, I will also try to help you find the best resources possible.
