Schedules & Registration
Adult Education classes are non-credit and are provided at no cost to learners who qualify. Students acquire basic academic skills that assist them in transitioning to employment, further training or education. Eligibility requirements vary by program.
Facilities Classes may be held in a variety of locations including churches, businesses, schools, libraries, and housing projects. The major learning sites are: |

Registration/Testing and Fees Convenient registration occurs throughout the semester (see below for enrollment dates). A two-three hour assessment during registration ensures accurate class placement. Qualifying students attend classes without cost. Note to GED students: There is a $35 fee to take the GED test. Effective July 1, 2009, the GED Testing Fee will increase to $50.
Enrollment Qualifications All students must reside in the Black Hawk College District; must be at least 17 years of age or older and not enrolled in a K-12 school district (sixteen-year-old students may enroll only with parental and K-12 school district permission); Optional Education/Youth GED classes are designed for students ages 16-18. Class times and locations are subject to change based on enrollments. |

Optional Education Classes New students and those who have not attended Optional Education classes since January 2008 must attend an Orientation session at Outreach Center or BHC Technology Center in Rock Island before enrolling in classes. Adult Basic Education and General Educational Development (GED) Preparation Classes are informal and instruction is individualized. Adult Basic Education instruction covers a range of basic skills from a beginning level through pre-GED. GED instruction prepares students to pass the high school equivalency test (GED). Subjects include writing, social studies, science, reading, mathematics, and the United States and Illinois Constitutions. |

Computer Applications Computer Applications is available to qualified Adult Education students. Classes are offered in keyboarding, computer awareness, and introduction to word processing, database, and spreadsheet software. Times and locations to be announced at a later date.
English as a Second Language Classes are offered to non- or limited-English speaking adults 16 years of age or older who are not regularly enrolled in high school, and who reside in the college district. Instruction is offered in English at a beginning through an intermediate level. Students learn basic English skills that are necessary to survive and function in American society. |

Spanish General Educational Development (GED) Preparation This class prepares students to pass the high school equivalency test (GED) in Spanish. Optional Education Adult Basic Education and GED classes adapted to the needs of younger learners and High School Completion classes leading to a diploma from a cooperating high school are offered to students who are at least 16 years old and not enrolled in high school. |

Family Literacy Family Literacy classes provide Adult Basic, GED, or English as a Second Language instruction to qualifying parents while providing instruction for children and parent/child activities. Classes are offered at various locations and times. Call 796-5730 for details.
Job Net Workshop A variety of workshops are offered weekly at the Illinois workNet Center to assist individuals in developing successful job search tools and strategies. Job seekers can learn about applications, resume development, interview techniques, identifying the hidden job market, Internet job search, and other practical job seeking skills.
