| The faculty in the Foreign Language Program keep up to date with the new methodology and teaching approaches in foreign languages. They have lived in a variety of different countries and they travel abroad frequently in order to keep in touch with changes in their languages of instruction and to maintain personal contact with the countries' cultural, political, economic and social life. María C. Lucas-Murillo, Professor I was born in Salamanca, Spain. I lived in Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Bilbao and Madrid. During my university years, while living in Bilbao, I spent every summer studying abroad in Germany (Zweibrücken, Berchtesgaden, Freiburg, Regensburg and Saarbrücken) and in France (Reims). The last year of university I was an exchange student between the University of Saarbrücken and the University of Deusto in Bilbao. Upon returning to Spain my family moved to Madrid where I received an internship at the European Union followed by a contract to work as an interpreter for the Spanish booth at the Commission of the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. I moved to the USA in 1981 where I attended the University of Iowa. I have been working at Black Hawk College since 1987. At Black Hawk College I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of languages at different levels and to fulfill responsibilities such as lead-instructor for foreign languages, advisor to international students, organizer of international events like the annual Fall Foreign Film Festival; the Hispanic Month; The Foreign Language Awareness Day; and to contribute to Black Hawk College’s International Festival. Kristine HarwoodKristine Harwood has earned a B.S. in mathematics from Winona State University in Minnesota and a B.S. in Spanish from St. Cloud State University also in Minnesota. She is currently working on her Masters degree through the University of Northern Iowa program in Spain and has spent two summers in Spain taking classes. Her first appreciation for the Spanish language came as she was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras from 1998-1990 where she was assigned to work with small businesses. Besides living for this extended time in Honduras and the summers with a family in Spain, Kristine has traveled as a tourist to Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. Ms. Harwood has taught junior high mathematics and social studies in New Jersey, Spanish at Pleasant Valley Junior High in Iowa, and is currently teaching mathematics at Moline High School and Spanish 101 and 102 at Black Hawk College.
