Students planning to major in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin (Classics) or Spanish at a four- year institution should follow the Black Hawk College Associate in Arts curriculum. The completion of the course of study outlined will satisfy graduation requirements of Black Hawk College. Since four-year institutions may require specific courses for a major in the above-named languages, students should consult with the counseling office at Black Hawk College for additional information.

Students taking these languages learn to listen, speak, read and write the foreign language (Latin has more emphasis on reading and writing). Conversations and tests cover a great variety of everyday situations and different cultural aspects. The study of the above-mentioned foreign languages includes the use of a basic text, a reader, a workbook, a laboratory manual, audio and video tapes, computer assisted instruction and research on the web.

The following foreign language courses fulfill the humanities of general education requirements at Black Hawk College and most colleges or universities to which students might transfer: Levels 202, 253 and 254. Many private four-year colleges and universities as well as certain state universities, require one to two years of foreign language for a bachelor of arts degree.

The knowledge of any of the above-mentioned foreign languages gives students the understanding of another culture and opens such vast treasures as literature, history, philosophy, art, and music.

While courses in this curriculum are offered on both campuses, students need to contact an advisor for more specific information on course availability.
