Special Services
"Your work is to discover your work and
then with all your heart give yourself to it."--Buddha

Our ESL Program provides important student services to complement the educational program. We want to ensure the success of all of our students. The following services are available to both international students and students residing in Black Hawk College District 503:

Advising
After enrolling in levels 6 and 7 of the ESL Program, students are assigned to an advisor who will help them to create a plan of study and to complete financial aid documents, if needed. These advisors connect students to college resources and assist them while they are completing their transfer, certificate, or vocational programs.

Counseling
Counseling services are available to students at all levels of ESL. Counseling may include adjusting to life in the U.S. goal setting, career exploration, managing stress, study skills, time management, coping with loss, test and speech anxiety, relationship issues, communication skills with faculty, life transitions, depression, perfectionism, motivation, conflict resolution, assertiveness training, crisis intervention/assessment, and referrals to community agencies and services.

The International Student Association
This organization is open to all international and local students. It was established so international students could share their cultures with the Black Hawk College community through activities and events. It also provides social opportunities for students on and off campus. Throughout the years, this active club has sponsored lecture series, trips, picnics, and fund-raising activities. The major fund-raising event of this club has been the International Festival which attracts many people from the community as well as the College. Through this club, students form strong friendships and enjoy the opportunity to develop leadership skills. Meetings are weekly throughout the semester.

Career Resource Center
The Career Resource Center contains a wealth of information and provides a variety of services free of charge to students in the College and to people in the community who wish to explore the world of work. The staff of the Center will help individuals to explore their interests and to discover their abilities and develop a plan for career decision making. They will also familiarize students with the user-friendly computer-based career search programs as well as internet-based career search services and job listings. To complete the job search process, the staff conducts workshops in resume writing and interviewing.
