Portfolio Project
DescriptionWhile in Level 7, students complete a portfolio through which they assess their own learning in reading, writing, and speaking. They also reflect on their own learning processes and their experiences in the ESL Program. The portfolio provides valuable information to the students as they move to their academic or vocational program. It also provides valuable feedback for the continual improvement of the ESL Program. Elements of the Portfolio
| Element One: Reading |
Annotating an Article: Students will submit a reading completed in ESL 074 which has been marked with marginal notes, both functional and content.
Summary of an Article: Students submit and comment on a summary that was completed in ESL 074/074A.
Reflection on the Reading Process: Student reflects on how they have personalized the reading process that has been taught in the ESL Program. |
| Element Two: Public Speaking |
Speech Selection: Students select a speech of 7 minutes or longer and include the video tape with the portfolio.
Student Reflection: Students analyze their own speech. They comment on its strengths and weaknesses. They also explain why they constructed the speech the way that they did.
Reflection on Public Speaking: Students will comments on the steps that they take when developing a speech. How have they personalized the process taught in the class.

| Element Three: Writing |
Essay: Students select an essay written in ESL 076/076A. The essay must contain cited sources.
Reflection on the Essay: Student critique their own essay. They also explain the choices that they made in the development.
Reflection on the Writing Process: Students comment on how they have personalized the writing process that has been taught in the Program.

| Element Four: Reflection Letter |
Students write a letter to accompany the portfolio. It contains the following:
- The student's goals and how the ESL Program has moved the student toward his/her goal.
- The student's evaluation of his/her level of English.
- A description of a satisfying or frustrating learning experience in the ESL Program.
- An evaluation of the ESL Program.
