ESL Program PoliciesHomeworkYou must turn in your homework the day it is due; otherwise, it is considered late. Late homework will be accepted within a week of its due date, and you will receive half credit for it. After a week, the work will not be accepted, and you will receive a 0 for that assignment. Consistently turning in homework late will significantly reduce your grade. You are responsible for keeping track of your assignments, but if you have questions about an assignment, please ask me.
Quizzes/Tests/ExamsYou must take all tests and quizzes during class on the day they are assigned. If you have a problem getting to class, please call your teacher before the test. During the semester, you have ONE chance to make up a missed test. If you miss any more tests, you will receive 0's for those tests, regardless of whether or not you call the teacher.
Final Exam
You must take the final exam on the day assigned by the College. Any exception to this policy must be made through the ESL Coordinator at least three weeks in advance. Sometimes plane reservations are difficult to arrange at holiday times, so please make your reservations early in the semester. Please talk with the International Student Coordinator if your are having trouble making reservations.
AbsencesOur class are very intensive, and we learn new information every day. In addition, one important way that we must meet the objectives of the classes is working with classmates about material presented in class. Thus, you must come to class on time every day. If you miss more than four classes during the semester, you may be removed from the class, according to the College's rules. Please also see the rules about punctuality below.
If you must be absent, please call your teacher before class. You are responsible for finding out from the teacher or a classmate about the homework for the day you miss. You must come to class prepared on the following day, with completed homework ready to turn in.
Punctuality
Because our classes are so intensive, we start working as soon as class starts. The few minutes before class starts are used to return homework, to get settled down, to get out the materials that you'll need in class, maybe to ask a question. Thus, the betst strategy is to come five or ten minutes early so that you can be ready to start class exactly on time. If you come into class after we start, you'll interrupt the class.
If you come to class late two times, that will count as one absence. "Late" means walking in the door to the classroom after the teacher has started class. Even one or two minutes late is "late." Come early so you won't have to worry about it!
WithdrawalIf you decide not to complete this course, you must drop the course officially. You are financially responsible for tuition and fees for the class not officially dropped by the appropriate refund date. The schedule for refunds is printed on the back of the Add/Drop Form and is also in the College Catalog and class schedule. You will find copies of the Add/Drop form in the Enrollment Services Office. However, before deciding to drop a class, please talk with your instructor or advisor. Dropping may affect your immigration status or your financial aid.
Cell Phone Policy
The use of cell phones in the classroom is prohibited. Please turn your cell phone off before entering the class. However, in special circumstances, if you are waiting for an emergency call, please put the phone on vibration mode and leave the class quietly when the call comes through. You should alert your instructor about such a call.
Children in the ClassroomWe understand that emergency circumstances may require you to bring your child to class. Please notify your instructor ahead of time and make the necessary arrangements for this rare occurrence.
