How Are Students Selected for Participation?
If you are a high school junior or senior, who is interested in taking dual enrollment classes, contact your high school counselor to determine if you have the prerequisites necessary to enroll in college classes. If so, the next step is to apply to the college and take the necessary placement test (COMPASS). In consultation with your guidance counselor, you can review the test results to identify courses for which you have met the entry-level requirements. Additional selection policies and practices may be employed by each high school district.

Typically, the kinds of courses available for Dual Enrollment are a mix of general education transfer courses and applied science courses. The Black Hawk College courses may be held at one of the College's campuses or extension sites or, in some cases, at your high school.

Who Pays the College Tuition?
You are responsible for paying all applicable tuition and fees and the purchase of books. Students who qualify for the federal free or reduced cost lunch program may be eligible for tuition scholarships. Contact your high school counselor for details.

Getting Your Books
If your high school does not purchase books for your Dual enrollment classes, you will order and pay for your books as do all other college students in one of the following ways:
  • Visit the Quad Cities or East Campus bookstores to purchase the books and other course materials in person.
  • Call the Quad Cities (309-796-5500) or East Campus (309-854-1716) bookstore to order your books and course materials.
  • Order your books online. They will be shipped to you.

Where can I take Dual Enrollment classes?
High Schools
  • Many high schools offer dual enrollment classes in their own high school buildings. The college instructor may be teaching face-to-face in the building or may be teaching live via the televised distance learning system from one of the Black Hawk College campuses.
  • Some high schools join forces to offer a class at a high school or one of the college campuses where students from several high schools convene together.
  • In these situations, all of the students in the class are high school students taking a college class from a college instructor.

Black Hawk College Quad Cities Campus, Moline, IL or East Campus, Kewanee, IL
  • Many individual high school students arrange with their high school counselors or parents (home schoolers) to enroll in a college class that is offered on one of the Black Hawk campuses or extension sites.
  • This works particularly well when you want to take a class that does not have sufficient interest at your high school to offer a full class on site.
  • In this case, you are a member of a regular college class comprised of college students.
