BHC budget wins national award

For the second consecutive year, Black Hawk College has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
A Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation also was presented to the college’s Accounting Services Department.
The award represents a significant achievement by the college. It reflects the commitment of the college to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. To receive the award, the college had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:
- a policy document
- a financial plan
- an operations guide
- a communications device
Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.
Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.
The GFOA is a nonprofit professional organization serving 17,600 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.
BHC wins state award for business partnership
Posted Dec. 11, 2009

The Illinois Community College Trustees Association has awarded Black Hawk College and the Rock Island Arsenal-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (JMTC) with the 2009 Business/Industry Partnership Award.
The annual award recognizes an Illinois business that has built a successful workforce-training alliance with a local community college.
When choosing a winner, the awards committee considers criteria such as goals, uniqueness of the partnership, and how the work impacts what’s going on in the community.
The Black Hawk College-JMTC partnership began more than 30 years ago with the Arsenal’s Machinist, Toolmaker and Facility Maintenance Apprenticeships.
In 2004, the collaboration expanded to include production MIG welding. The college needed a welding lab to respond to local demand for trained welders, and the Arsenal generously provided the space in the JMTC welding shop. Since 2004, nearly 800 students have graduated from the program.
