Black Hawk College East Campus will host an American Red Cross blood drive during National Liver Awareness Month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 in the Game Room in Building A.

To donate, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

The American Red Cross encourages people across the country to focus on liver health. Liver transplants are the second most common transplant, with more than 6,000 of them performed every year in the U.S., according to the American Liver Foundation.

“Liver transplant patients often require large amounts of blood transfusions during surgery,” said Shelly Heiden, Community CEO of the Red Cross Heart of America Blood Services Region. “Thanks to our dedicated blood donors, the Red Cross is able to meet the needs of liver transplant patients and countless others.”

There are a variety of ways to help protect your liver from disease. The American Liver Foundation suggests exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet low in fatty foods, limiting alcohol intake, managing medications appropriately and limiting contact with toxins. More information is available at www.liverfoundation.org.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
