The Small Business Certificate Program has been designed for use by the small business owner or prospective business owner. These courses offer practical knowledge based on business theories presented in a friendly format and are applicable in the small business setting. This series is offered by the Black Hawk College Illinois SBDC, the Iowa Small Business Development Centers, the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce, the Colona Chamber of Commerce, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Kewanee Chamber of Commerce, Kewanee Economic Development Corporation, and the village of Milan.

Learn about the world of owning your own business, the myths and realities of self employment, and your entrepreneurial potential. Discover what a business plan entails and why you need one.

This session will help you understand sales projections/cash flow statements and how they are part of your business plan.

9 a.m. – Financing a Small Business
This session examines the various funding sources available to finance a project. Learn how the SBDC can help you develop a successful approach to successfully acquiring a business loan.

12 p.m. – Creation of Pro-Forma and Start-up Financials for the Lender/Investor/Spouse
Attendees will create their start-up and the 1st year of their pro-forma projections that businesses need before presenting to a lender, an investor, or spouse. Attendees will also receive a flash drive with business plan templates as well as their personalized start-up and 1st year pro-forma statement.

Learn the fundamentals of marketing. Learn which mediums of advertising and promoting are best suited for your type of business.

Identify different structures of business ownership, required taxes and basic legal pitfalls to avoid. Find out how much and what type of insurance you will need from a licensed insurance broker.

9 a.m. – Utilizing the Internet, Email, and Social Media as a Business Tool
This session will help attendees determine what type of online presence will best fit their business and how to go about developing it. Learn about what qualities determine a good site, options that are available, and the costs associated with owning and maintaining the site. In addition, social media and effective e-mail campaigns to improve the bottom line will be discussed.
