Head Baseball Coach – Arnie Chavera
Coach Chavera enters his eighth year as Head Baseball coach of the Braves. A native of Texas, he graduated from Arlington Sam Houston high school and played two years at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, Texas. During that time, he was coached by Skip Johnson, who is now the assistant coach for the University of Texas Longhorns. During the summer of 1994, Chavera played for the Elkart Dusters of the, collegiate wood-bat, Jayhawk League. The team won the Jayhawk League championship and finished third at the NBC World Series. While in the Jayhawk league, Chavera played for Greg Evans who is currently the assistant coach at Oklahoma State University. After playing one year at Dallas Baptist University, Coach Chavera signed with the Houston Astros baseball organization and played five years of minor-league baseball. Three of those seasons were under the tutelage of Manny Acta, current manager of the Cleveland Indians. As a professional, Chavera has a lifetime batting average of .286 highlighted by 61 homeruns and 77 doubles. In 2000, he earned a Mid-Season & Post-Season All-Star selection.

In seven years coaching for Black Hawk, Chavera has led the Braves to the Arrowhead Conference Championship on five occasions while receiving the Conference Coach of the Year award in each of those seasons. Along with conference champions, the 2006, 2009 and 2011 teams were also the Region IV Sectional Champions. The Braves baseball program has won conference titles in 9 of the past 12 years. The 2011 team set a new season wins record while going 44-9. The team was ranked in the NJCAA National Polls for most of the season while being ranked as high as #3. The 2011 team finished ranked #10 in the country. In seven years Chavera has placed 48 sophomores at NCAA DI, DII, DIII, and NAIA, as well as, Major League Baseball to continue their playing careers. While stressing academics, he has coached 49 Academic All-Conference and 9 Academic All-American award recipients.

Coach Chavera has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Performance and Fitness. In 2004, he served as a Strength Coach for the Minnesota Twins Baseball Club. Chavera is the Activities Director for Black Hawk College. He also serves as the Arrowhead Athletic Conference baseball chairperson.

Before arriving at Black Hawk, Chavera was an assistant coach for St. Ambrose University from 2002-2004. As the first base coach, he was in charge of hitting, catchers, and outfielders and headed the strength program. Prior to St. Ambrose, Chavera was an assistant coach for Davenport Assumption high school during the seasons of 2001 and 2002.

Coach Chavera and his wife Ericka reside in Davenport, Iowa with their 5 year old daughter Giselle Bryn.

Assistant Coach Travis Webb »
Assistant Coach – Travis Webb
Coach Webb returns for his third season as Pitching Coach for Black Hawk College. A Quad City native, Coach Webb was a standout pitcher for Riverdale (IL) High School. He was a three time All-Conference selection and earned 1st Team All-State honors as a senior in 2004.

Travis began his collegiate career pitching for Parkland Community College. In 2005, he helped the team win its way to the NJCAA World Series.

Webb continued his career at the University of Tennessee at Martin (Div. I). He graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health & Human Performance with a concentration in Strength & Conditioning. Soon after graduation, Travis dove straight into his coaching career by becoming a member of the Front Royal Cardinals (VA) baseball staff of the collegiate Valley Baseball League. There, he was the Assistant Pitching Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach.

As pitching coach, Webb helped guide the 2011 staff to an impressive 2.97 Team ERA. As a staff, the pitchers collected 16 complete games and 7 shutouts. They recorded 323 strike outs and 140 walks over 358 innings. The opposition only hit .232 while the staff only gave up 2 homeruns on the season. Webb will act as Pitching Coach and Strength Coach for the pitching staff. Travis is also an Associate Scout for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball organization.

Assistant Coach - Mike Kool »
Assistant Coach – Mike Kool
Coach Kool enters his second year on the coaching staff of the Braves. Kool attended Davenport (IA) Central high school and was a three year letter winner for the Blue Devils. In 2005, Mike was a member of the Mississippi Athletic Conference All-Conference team, All-District team and IHSA All-State team. He was also named MAC Player of the Year in 2005.

After high school, Kool pitched for Coach Chavera at Black Hawk during the 2006 & 2007 seasons. During his two year stint, Mike compiled 9 wins for Black Hawk. In 2007, he was the ace of the staff and set a school record that season with 7 complete games pitched. That record still stands today. Kool was a two-time Academic All-Conference winner while at Black Hawk. Coach Kool continued his playing career at the University of Illinois at Chicago (Div. I). While at UIC, his career was highlighted by 11 total wins on the mound and earning a spot on the 2009 Horizon League All-Tournament team. Mike graduated in 2009 from UIC with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and Sociology. Kool will serve as Bench Coach and assist the pitching staff for the Braves.

Assistant Coach - Caleb Rangel »
Assistant Coach – Caleb Rangel
Coach Rangel enters his first year as an assistant for Black Hawk. Rangel is from Rock Island, IL where he played for Alleman Catholic High School. While at Alleman, he was an All-Conference and two-time All –Metro Selection. Coach Rangel went on to have a stellar playing career at Central College (IA) from 2008-2011. He was a three-time Iowa All-Conference winner. In 2008, Rangel was awarded Most Valuable Newcomer and in 2009 he earned Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors. A career .349 hitter, Coach Rangel holds Central Baseball career records in Doubles (44) and Walks (100). He is second in Games Played (153).

Coach Rangel’s duties will be Outfielders and Base Running Coach, as well as, Strength Coach for position players.

Assistant Coach - Bryan Jordan »
Assistant Coach – Bryan Jordan
Coach Jordan enters his first year as an assistant for the Braves. Jordan is from Cincinnati, Ohio where he played at Oak Hills High School. During his junior and senior seasons with the Highlanders, Jordan hit .360 earning 2-time All-Conference and 2-time All-Area honors. He was member of the last Conference Championship team at Oak Hills. He finished in the top 5 percentile of his graduating class.

In 2008, Jordan came to BHC to play 3B for Coach Chavera. While at Black Hawk, Coach Jordan put up some impressive numbers. In 2009, Bryan led the team in 8 offensive categories while hitting .484 on the season. He drove in 68 runs, which is a current Black Hawk record. He also hit safely in 31 straight games, which is also a current school record. While being one of the team captains 2009, Jordan earned Arrowhead All-Conference honors and was voted 1st Team NJCAA Region IV and NJCAA North Central District Team honors.

Bryan excelled in the class room while at Black Hawk. He was a 2-Time Arrowhead Academic All-Conference winner and earned NJCAA Academic All-American honors while graduating with a 3.59 GPA.

After BHC, Coach Jordan signed a full ride scholarship to play at Western Illinois University (Div. I). Starting 102 games for the Leathernecks, Bryan hit a career .298 with 27 Doubles, 1 Triple , 11 Homeruns, 82 Runs and 60 Runs Batted In. He is currently ranked 5th in school history with 18 Doubles in a single season. He is ranked 4th< in school history with 51 Runs scored in a single season. Jordan was selected 2nd> Team All-Conference as a senior. Coach Jordan will graduate this December from WIU with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Management. Bryan will serve as Hitting Coach for the Braves.
