Literacy is for Everyone (L.I.F.E.)

The Literacy is for Everyone (LIFE) program matches volunteer tutors with adults who need help with reading, math, spelling and writing and assists persons in developing their literacy skills up to the 9th grade academic skill level.

Qualifications
You must either live in or work in Illinois
Be at least 16 years of age
Read at a 9th grade reading level or below

Cost
There is no cost for qualified students.

How Can I Volunteer?
Volunteers are needed to help adults needing assistance in achieving functional skills in reading, spelling, writing, arithmetic or English as a Second Language. The Literacy is For Everyone Program (LIFE) was created to provide a second chance to adults who have not yet attained their desired or needed literacy level. To become a volunteer tutor please call 309-797-7138.

Training
LIFE provides training sessions and then matches tutors with students based upon available times, tutoring site locations and learning/teaching styles.

Sites
Over 100 sites including libraries, churches and community centers, have been established in the various communities within Black Hawk College’s Service area.
