Health Insurance

All international students at Black Hawk College are required to have health insurance in order to register for courses. The health insurance must provide for treatment in case of illness or accident and must also contain provisions for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains (often referred to as “rescuer’s expenses”).

Students have two options:

  • They may purchase the required insurance in their home country before coming to the U.S.
  • They may purchase insurance from any insurance carrier in the U.S.

If a student has purchased insurance either in the home country or from an insurance company in the U.S., the student must provide proof of that coverage to the Coordinator of the International Student & Scholar Program to be permitted to register for courses. An important item of information you must supply is the expiration date of your insurance coverage; make sure that you have a document from your insurance company that shows this date.

Once a student has been admitted to Black Hawk College and the form I-20 or the Form DS-2019 has been issued, the student is advised to study this website carefully. Relevant paper information is also mailed to the student and he/she should carefully examine the description of insurance available through the College so as to determine whether purchasing insurance in the home country before coming to the United States would be beneficial or not.
