Software Specifications
Some courses may have course materials that require a free plugin, such as the ones listed here. You may be prompted to download them when trying to open the course materials, or you can follow these links to download and install them now. Be sure to select the most recent version for your computer platform (PC or Mac):
Java, QuickTime Player, Flash, Shockwave, Adobe Reader, Windows Media Player, Real Player, or PowerPoint Viewer. Mac users may use ThinkFree Viewers for Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel & Word.
Other Tech Tips when Using BHC Tools
Word processing:
Most likely, you will be required to submit assignments that are created with a word processing program. Some instructors will require you to save all of your files in Rich Text Format (RTF) before submitting them.
Save Files in RTF Format
Most word processors use these steps:
- Open your document in your word processor program.
- Click ‘File’ on your menu bar.
- Select ‘Save As…’
- Choose “Rich Text Format” in the drop down menu on the Save As… dialog box.
- Click ‘Save’
E-mail:
Instructors use your BHC student e-mail (myBlackHawk) for all communications. If you prefer to receive BHC e-mail in another e-mail address, you may forward your myBH email to your preferred address. If you are not a BHC student, your institution has most likely provided us with your college e-mail address, as well.
Internet Access
Dial-up access to the Internet may work for some functions, but could limit your ability to access course materials and activities. High speed access is recommended, for example, to view video clips provided by your instructor. Satellite access is not recommended.
Internet Skills
You will need basic Internet skills such as using a web browser, sending e-mail with file attachments, searching for resources on the web, and participating in an online discussion using discussion boards and “chats.” Use the Internet Tutorials online resource if you are a new computer or Internet user or want to improve your skills.
