A Course Management System (CMS) is a software tool that instructors use to develop and manage their online courses. Canvas is the CMS used for most online courses at Black Hawk College. Instructors also use it to develop supplementary online activities for hybrid and Web-enhanced classes.
A few online instructors at Black Hawk use Course Compass instead; if your class uses this CMS, you will be notified by your instructor about how to access and use it. Many of the same tools that appear in Canvas are also available in Course Compass. This module will focus on introducing you to Canvas. If your course does not use Canvas, you can skip this module or skim it to get an idea of what types of tools will be available to you in CMS.
