I began my studies at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1996. My interest in genetics led me to graduate school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. I studied in the laboratory of Dr. Bruce Lamb, where I investigated the genetics and biochemistry of Alzheimer’s Disease using mouse models for the disease. During my graduate studies I also took time to teach at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. That experience confirmed my desire to teach undergraduates.
After graduating with my Ph.D. in Genetics in 2003, I returned to the University of Northern Iowa to teach and do research. While there I was introduced to a new area of research, the morphological and molecular comparison of regional varieties of grapes.
In 2006 I joined the faculty at Black Hawk College, and since then I have been enjoying teaching students about my favorite subject, biology. Every semester I encounter new students and have the opportunity to witness them grow in understanding and interest in biology. It is great to hear from students who have gone on to future academic and career success.
