The ArtSpace Gallery at the Quad-Cities Campus is showcasing “Primitive Modern: Artwork by Helen Boyd, Emily Christenson and Jacki Olson” Monday, Feb. 13 through Friday, March 9.
Photos from the exhibit opening above.
The interpretations of primitive art, culture or methods in this exhibit are an attempt to bridge time and to connect in a spiritual way to the ancient world. Drawing from the natural environment at several regional sites largely untouched through time, these works represent an attempt to reach deeper in the world of our predecessors.
What inspired them?
What did they treasure?
How did their imaginations fill their days and nights?
These artworks use natural materials when possible and were created using primitive methods, such as wood fires, rubbings and water found on site yet also incorporate modern methods or materials to create a link between the two environments.
ArtSpace is Black Hawk College’s art gallery. Located in the hallway of Building 4 of the Quad-Cities Campus, ArtSpace displays exhibits that rotate on a monthly basis. Exhibits are varied and range from pastels to paintings, pottery, sculpture, prints and installation.
Artists from around the Quad-Cities, the region and the country have displayed their works in ArtSpace.
The mission of ArtSpace is to offer a diversity of styles and points of view to the BHC community while maintaining a high quality of professional artwork.
During the last month of the academic year, ArtSpace is reserved for our Student Art Show. BHC students submit artworks that are judged by a local professional artist. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Local, regional, and national artists are invited to submit a proposal for ArtSpace.
Black Hawk College, located in Moline, Ill., hosts monthly exhibits in its ArtSpace Gallery in Building 4. Artists are invited to submit exhibition proposals for the academic years 2012-13 and 2013-14. The proposal should include one or two paragraphs describing the artwork (a full artist statement is welcome, but not necessary until the proposal is accepted). Group proposals are also welcome and must include sample images by all proposed artists.
All 2- and 3-D media will be considered. Proposals will be selected based on compatibility with the space and potential to showcase diversity and high artistic quality.
Submissions for ArtSpace should include your name and contact information (including address, phone number and return e-mail address) in a cover letter or in the body of an e-mail. Files should be in a Microsoft Word, Works or WordPad document. Proposals are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Submissions must include:
- Proposal/artist statement: Include the previously mentioned proposal or artist statement.
- Image files: Your images must be submitted in JPEG file format. The files should be numbered or titled (for example: “1.jpg” or “StarryNight.jpg”) so that they can be identified against your image list. Provide a sampling of at least 5 pieces.
- Image list: Each entry on the image list should be numbered to coordinate with your image file names, and should include: Title, Medium, Dimensions and Price.
