Hein Construction continues the construction of the new Black Hawk College Welding and Skilled Trades Center adjacent to the college’s Community Education Center at 404 E. Third St. in downtown Kewanee.
The foundation and steel structure are complete. The contractor is currently working on installing the roof panels and pouring the concrete floors.
The 15,000-square-foot facility will include three lab spaces, three faculty offices, two classrooms and student commons space. The primary lab spaces will include a 24-station welding lab, a welding project lab and a flex lab. The flex lab space will serve other skilled trades programs offered by the college.
The college broke ground in the snow March 5. The building is scheduled to be completed in November with classes starting in January 2015.
The $4 million project will be paid for with 2012 bond funds. The city of Kewanee donated the land to Black Hawk College.
