Black Hawk College will offer two new health care information management certificates at the Community Education Center in downtown Kewanee beginning in August.

“Graduates of our Medical Billing Specialist and the Medical Coding Specialist programs are in high demand by employers so we wanted to make these career opportunities more convenient,” said Betsey Morthland, dean of health sciences at Black Hawk College.

These programs prepare students to work in hospital billing departments, physicians’ offices, health care clinics and health insurance companies. The demand for graduates is very strong.

In the past year, medical billing specialist and medical coding specialist graduates at Black Hawk College had a 100% job placement rate. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the median pay nationwide in 2012 for medical records and health information technicians was $34,160.

“With changes in health care nationally, we just see demand for people with these skills increasing,” Morthland said.
